Why a Swedish licence costs 5,000 kr — or 30,000 kr

The official pieces are the same in every town: a free learner’s permit, an eye test, Risk 1 and Risk 2, a photo, the theory test, the driving test, a car for that test, and the plastic card. Add those up with typical course prices and a first-time pass, and you are usually in the 5,000–8,000 kr band before any school lessons.

Lessons are the rest of the bill. A traffic-school hour in 2026 is often 600–900 kr. Fifteen hours is already more than every mandatory fee combined. That is why people quote 15,000–30,000 kr for a category B körkort, and why someone who already has private miles as a passenger or practice driver can come in far lower.

Bigger cities tend to sit at the high end. Lessons cost more, traffic is denser so you need more of them, and a car is less of a daily habit — so you arrive with fewer hours in the passenger seat. In smaller towns the opposite is common.

Traffic school, private practice, or both

Sweden does not require a traffic school for category B. You need a valid learner’s permit, both risk courses, and the two tests. A school is optional. Private practice needs an accompanying driver (handledare) approved specifically for you, plus the green-and-white ÖVNINGSKÖR sign visible from behind.

• School only: simpler, and the school can supply the test car. You pay for every hour.
• Private only: cheapest if you have a patient supervisor and a suitable insured car. You still book Risk 1+2 and the tests yourself.
• A mix: the usual compromise — school for junctions, motorway, or the test-car feel; private miles for routine driving.
• From 1 August 2026 the old introduction course (introduktionsutbildning) is no longer required for private B practice.

What a failed test adds

You pay the full Trafikverket fee again. Same-day retakes in the same category are not allowed. Book theory and driving a few weeks apart so a failed knowledge test does not burn the driving slot.

• Theory: 420 kr daytime, 520 kr after 18:00 and at weekends.
• Driving: 1,000 kr daytime, 1,400 kr after 18:00 and at weekends — plus the car (800 kr at Trafikverket, or whatever your school charges).
• Cancel or move a booking at least 24 hours ahead or you still pay.

What this calculator does not include

It is an estimate for a first Swedish category B licence, not a quote and not the price of owning a car afterwards.

• Insurance, fuel, and wear on a private practice car beyond the “other” lump.
• Medical certificates if Transportstyrelsen asks for more than the standard health declaration.
• B96 or BE trailer entitlements.
• A school’s own package discounts — ask them; packs are often cheaper per hour.
• Living costs, time off work, or travel to a skid track.

State fees are the same everywhere. Lessons and risk courses are not. Most people land between 15,000 and 30,000 kr. The cheap end is lots of private practice and first-time passes. Cities are usually dearer than smaller towns because lessons cost more and people have fewer passenger hours before they start.
